Franchise Tax Board Alerts FIs: Taxpayer Account NSF Activity

The California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) is alerting financial institutions that due to technical issues with the FTB’s online payment application, taxpayers may have made duplicate payments in error, thus possibly causing non-sufficient funds (NSF) activities in taxpayer accounts.

Due to a service disruption to FTB’s Web Pay application on April 18, some taxpayers submitted more than one tax payment through FTB’s Web Pay in an effort to ensure their tax debt was paid on time (not realizing they were making multiple payments).

In some cases, this may have resulted in non-sufficient funds in taxpayer accounts. FTB is referring taxpayers to their banks to reverse any unintended payments and resulting NSF fees in cases where FTB was unable to timely reverse the duplicate payments.
