NV League Speaks for CUs at Chamber Event with Rep. Dina Titus

Last week, the Nevada Credit Union League joined an event with the Vegas Chamber in honor of Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV). During the meeting, Titus spoke on the state of Congress.

Specifically, she noted that she expects most major legislation to be considered after the November elections. Until then, Congress is unlikely to consider bills that are challenging to build consensus on, such as the tax credits under Donald Trump’s administration that expire in 2025.

When the audience was given an opportunity to speak during a question-and-answer period, Nevada Credit Union League Senior Vice President of Federal Government Affairs Stephanie Cuevas took the opportunity to talk about credit unions.

“Credit unions offer services and programs that come with a cost, and credit union members opt-in to these programs willingly,” Cuevas said. “The Biden Administration has been attacking fees that businesses leverage and calling them ‘junk fees.’ This is a political term that is not based on existing laws or statutes and is very misinformed. Is the ‘junk fee’ movement gaining traction in the Democratic Caucus?”

Titus responded that she enjoyed meeting with credit union leaders in Washington, D.C., noting that the movement’s advocates visited her in March. She shared that she does not see overdraft services as a “junk fee” because it’s not a surprise to the consumer. She understands that credit unions are offering a service that consumers want and need.

The congresswoman also shared that resort fees and other fees are not “junk fees” if the fees are advertised up front and do not have a surprise element to them. She closed her remarks by reiterating her support for transparent business practices and expressing her appreciation for the ongoing dialogue with credit union leaders.

After the event, Titus took time to greet local business leaders that are a part of the Vegas Chamber. Attendees expressed their gratitude for the congresswoman’s insights and willingness to engage in meaningful discussions.
