Three California CUs Are National Desjardins, Herring Winners

Desjardins

Delta Schools FCU and San Mateo CU were among those receiving first-place honors while Patelco CU received a second-place award at the national level in the Desjardins Adult Financial Education, Desjardins Youth Financial Education, and Louise Herring for Philosophy in Action award programs.

All three credit unions will be recognized at CUNA's 2019 Governmental Affairs Conference, to be held March 10-14 in Washington, D.C.

Delta Schools FCU—a state-level first-place winner in the Desjardins Youth Financial Literacy (less than $50 million)—won in the same category at the national level. The credit union was honored for its outstanding youth financial education efforts, especially its work with the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation's Bite of Reality program. The credit union has offered the program to thousands of kids at area schools, including at a one-day event reaching 700 students.

San Mateo CU took the first-place award in the Desjardins Adult Financial Literacy Award in its asset category (more than $1 billion) at the state level. It also won in the same category at the national level. The credit union was honored for its various adult financial education programs, such its interactive learning center on its website (working with a financial education online technology company EverFi), which has helped it reach and educate thousands of adults.

Patelco CU, which had received two first-place awards at the state level in the Dora Maxwell and Louise Herring program, took second place in the Herring Award in its asset category (more than $1 billion) at the national level. The credit union was recognized for its TRIP program, which assists members with riskier credit profiles to improve their financial health.

This year, a total of six entries from five California credit unions moved forward to the national competition. Each awards program is administered at the state level by the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues, and nationally by the Credit Union National Association. Entries were submitted to the Leagues and judged by a committee from the Mountain West Credit Union Association.

The Dora Maxwell Award honors credit unions for their community outreach efforts. The Desjardins Adult Financial Education Awards honor credit union efforts to educate adult members and nonmembers. Only first-place winners in each asset category advance to the national competition.
