Update on CUAid—Harvey & Irma

The National Credit Union Foundation activated CUAid  to help credit union staff and volunteers affected by Tropical Storm Harvey.

Last week, they surpassed more $1 million in contributions for that campaign! CUAid has raised $817,765 with the Cornerstone CU Foundation raising $245,910, we are currently at $1,063,675 for Harvey relief. Truly, an example of the credit union philosophy of “people helping people” in action.

The Federation has been working with the Cornerstone CU Foundation to disburse those funds and as you can imagine, the need is great. Potentially up to 6,000 employees are affected and many credit unions are still closed in the disaster area. Already, the Cornerstone CU Foundation has received applications for over $500,000 in aid, with much more to come. This will be a long road to recovery.

As you have seen on the news, Hurricane Irma is impacting Florida, promising devastation on our Southeastern credit union colleagues. The Federation is working with the League of Southeastern CUs and the Southeastern CU Foundation to assess the situation and possibly launch a new CUAid disaster relief campaign if needed.

If a campaign is launched specifically to Irma, there will then be three donation options on CUAid.coop:

  • Hurricane Irma
  • Tropical Storm Harvey
  • General Disaster Relief Fund

The first two options will be donations designated to credit union people affected by that disaster per our policies. The general fund goes to credit union people affected by any disaster, now or later.
